By Heart

A tool for learning Scripture by heart

Scripture reference (optional)

Paste anything you want to know by heart — a psalm, a passage, a hymn, a poem. Or type a reference and let the box fill itself.

Reference and Look up
Type something like John 3:16, Psalm 23, or 1 Cor 13:4-7 and press Look up. The passage is fetched in the Berean Standard Bible and dropped into the box below, where you can still edit it. The reference is optional if you'd rather paste your own text — from any translation you like.
Remove verse numbers
On by default. Verse markers and a reference at the head of a line are dropped.
Save this passage
Keeps it in this browser so you can return to it. Nothing is sent anywhere.

The passage

    Kept in this browser only.

    Fade
Each press of the right arrow hides another share of the words, chosen at random, until nothing is left. The left arrow restores them. The rounds slider sets how many presses it takes to empty the passage — fewer rounds, larger chunks.
    First letters
Every word drops to its initial at once. The oldest method there is: enough to carry you, not enough to read.
    Recite
The reference alone, with the passage covered. Say it through, then press Show the words to see how you did.
    Peeking
In any mode tap a blank to uncover that one word for a moment. It hides itself again.
    Keys and paper
The left and right arrow keys work in Fade. Printing the page gives you the passage as it stands, blanks and all.

Tap any blank to peek at that word
